We already have embryonic, bone marrow and other stem cell types. But there are lot of ethical controversies and complications surrounding these cell types. Sometimes the procedure for extracting stem cell is invasive and very painful.
But cord blood on the other hand, is just the left over blood in the umbilical cord and placenta, both of which are thrown away usually after the birth of a baby. So there are no ethical complications and most importantly there is no invasive procedure or pain involved. Preparations are made to collect what will otherwise be thrown away as waste. Scientists are predicting that in the near future the collection of cord blood at birth will be nearly as common as birth itself.
- Since 1988, umbilical cord blood stem cells have been used to treat an increasing number of diseases. As of now stem cells have been effective in treating more than 80 life-threatening diseases including different type of cancers, Thalasemia, blood and metabolic disorders, immunodeficiency ailments and autoimmune diseases.
- Banking baby’s cord blood means that should a need arise in future, the child will have a source of stem cells that is an exact match, with almost no risk of rejection.
- Research into stem cells is very promising and indicates that numerous other diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Cartilage Regeneration, Liver Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord Injuries etc can be treated with stem cell therapy.
- Trials are on to treat lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, liver disorders and heart aliments.
